The Youth Forum reach new heights in Bala!
43 members from across Wales headed to Glan-llyn for what was promised to be a fun-filled weekend. Strangers soon became friends after we played some ice-breaker games including Bingo and Jockey, Cavalier, Knight.
After lunch, it was time to divide into two groups – one would hit the water with some Raft Building, and the other headed for the heights of the High Ropes course. Teamwork was the name of the game in the Raft Building, as they tried to build a raft safe enough for everyone to stay dry. They took to Bala Lake and thankfully the raft stayed in one piece, although the second group didn’t all manage to stay on the raft and things got very wet, very quickly!
Over at the High Ropes course, members scaled the climbing wall and worked their way around the course. It was then time to reach new heights and challenge their bravery with the 30-foot leap of faith!
After everyone’s nerves had settled and their clothes had dried off, it was time for some discussions on some Youth Forum Topics. The groups came up with ideas for what they’d like to see on the social media pages, at the Royal Welsh Show, as well as where they would like the next trip to take them.
After supper, it was time to hit the sports hall with a game of Unihoc. Four teams went head-to-head, with the puck darting from one end of the hall to the other. A fast and furious way to end day 1.
On Sunday morning, we headed to Garthmyn Isa Farm in Llanrwst where we were welcomed by Mr Huw Owen. Members heard about how this business had diversified from sheep and beef to Biomass in recent years, and we got an insight into the world of woodchip and how it’s created and used. A big thank you to Huw and family for such an interesting tour.
It was then time to head home, after what had been a weekend full of new experiences, new friends, and a lot of fun. Thank you to everyone who helped make this weekend happen, particularly the International Committee volunteers, without whom this weekend wouldn’t have been possible, and to the staff at Glan-Llyn for their hospitality.
This trip was kindly supported by the NFU Mutual Charitable Trust.
