Celyn’s experience in Cardiff as a member of the Welsh Youth Parliament
Over the first weekend of half term, I, Celyn Richards, the Chair of Wales YFC’s Youth forum had the honour of attending the Welsh Youth Parliament residential trip. I was elected as a member of the Welsh Youth Parliament as an organisational representative for Wales YFC which was a privilege and an honour. I have truly enjoyed every moment of being a part of the third term of the Welsh Youth Parliament so far, and I look forward to what’s to come!
On Friday, the 21st of February, we travelled to Cardiff and began our residential trip. After leaving our bags at the Urdd camp, we walked over to the Senedd, where we listened to presentations, including presentations from former members. Following these, we had a tour of the Chamber and found out exactly where we would be sitting on Saturday for our speeches. It was at this point I discovered I would be sitting in Vaughan Gething’s seat. After learning where everyone was sitting, and some facts about the chamber, it was time to return to accommodation for dinner and some ice breaking activities.
The tasks included talking in groups about what exactly we wanted to achieve during the residential weekend, and we also had the opportunity to get to know each other better. After this, we returned to the rooms where we would be staying in over the weekend. It was a nice surprise to be able to share a room with another member of the Wales YFC’s Youth Forum, Neli Rhys, who was elected to the Youth Parliament as a member of the Meirion Dwyfor constituency.
On Saturday morning, we all woke up early to prepare for the big day: our speeches. We went over to the Senedd, and by 10am, we were all in our seats, ready for a full day of listening. The speeches were divided into three sections, with everyone’s speeches falling under specific topics. Neli Rhys’ speech fell under the curriculum, and mine under agriculture. After everyone had completed their speeches, we voted on the three issues of our choice. The top three being:
● Cost of living and poverty
● Public transport and active travel
● Crime and safety
After a long day of speeches, we received ‘Media training’ by two journalists from BBC Wales, who taught us exactly what to do during interviews, and gave us the opportunity to ask questions. To end a long day, there was the opportunity to relax, and then to go bowling, a great way to end an amazing weekend!
Certainly, this residential trip was worthwhile and an absolutely amazing experience! I’ve made a lot of new friends, and I’m really looking forward to my future as a member of the Welsh Youth Parliament and can’t wait until the next trip!
