This is a call to all enthusiastic young farmers in Wales eager to explore the potential of their land use beyond their existing farming enterprises. Discover the exciting possibilities that cultivating fresh produce can offer and gain the knowledge to make it a successful venture.
‘Bwyd o’r Tir’ – Growing for the Future offers young farmers over the age of 16 the chance to explore profitable fruit and vegetable production through study visits to various farms showcasing different crops and business models.
Is this of interest to you? Get ready to be inspired by leading growers from across Wales and the border counties! You’ll gain first hand experience both on their thriving farms and through insightful classroom sessions.
The programme includes visits to a diverse array of horticultural businesses, spanning
large-scale field operations, successful soft fruit enterprises, and innovative specialist crop producers. Plus, industry experts will share crucial business and financial advice to help cultivate your own successful horticulture venture.
Welsh farm visits will feature Troed y Rhiw Organics in Llwyndafydd, a family-run, Soil Association certified organic farm dedicated to sustainable, holistic food production. They grow a diverse range of vegetables, herbs, soft fruit, and flowers, sold locally for ultimate freshness. Their Highland cattle, Welsh pigs, and chickens enhance farm fertility and supply meat for their community.
‘I’m excited to explore potential horticulture crops that can be grown successfully in Wales and to see what business opportunities that might present in future for young farmers.’ shares Jacqui Banks, Agrisgôp Leader for Farming Connect.
You’ll discuss horticulture business models, finances and profitability and learn from industry experts. The group will contribute to the creation of a YFC horticulture competition for 2026 with the first meeting being held at the Royal Welsh Show on 21 July 2025.
Continued support from local Welsh business for this sector allows opportunity for growth! ‘It’s great to have Castell Howell supporting this group, they are doing such a lot of interesting work with Welsh veg producers, getting Welsh veg into schools for example. It will be exciting to understand the opportunities that this presents in the future for young Welsh farmers.’
The sign-up window for Bwyd o’r Tir is 5-27 June, 2025. Don’t miss this chance to be part of it!
