Gwenllian’s Japanese Adventure

Recently, I had the incredible opportunity to travel to Japan with Wales YFC. This was my third trip with the organisation! Every trip has been special, but this one truly stood out, and I can’t wait to see where the next adventure will take us.

There were 16 of us on the trip, and from the very beginning in Tokyo to the end in Osaka, it was an adventure full of fun, laughter and unforgettable memories. From exploring the busy streets of Tokyo to visiting the peaceful temples of Kyoto and then experiencing the powerful history of Hiroshima, every day brought something new and special.

As one of this year’s trip leaders, I had a little more responsibility, from making sure everyone knew where we were going, to being in charge of the map and ensuring the whole group got from A to B! It was a fantastic experience and has greatly improved my independence and organisational skills (even if there were the occasional moments of getting lost!).

Of course, the trip wasn’t just about travelling – it was full of unique experiences. One of the highlights was going to watch sumo, and it was great to see Will and Owen have the chance to try it out against the professionals. That was an amazing spectacle to watch! We also had a fantastic day at Universal Studios, full of fun, rides and plenty of laughter, and seeing Mount Fuji so clearly was something truly special.

In Kyoto, we even tried to spot a geisha, and although it wasn’t easy, I managed to catch a glimpse of the back of one before she suddenly disappeared into the traditional houses.

Four of us were from Ceredigion – myself and Awen Davies from Penparc, Cari Davies from Tregaron and Hafwen Davies from Llanwennog – and it was especially lovely to share the experience with friends from home, as well as making new friends from all over Wales. In fact, I have made friends for life through YFC.

I would encourage every YFC member to make the most of the travel opportunities available. It really is a unique experience that opens your eyes to the world. Also, don’t be afraid to put forward ideas for future trips – it’s an opportunity for you to help shape the next adventure!

If anyone is considering applying or if you have any questions about the process, I would be more than happy to help, so don’t hesitate to get in touch.
