Wales YFC launch new Prime Pork competition

A new Prime Pork competition was launched in the Royal Welsh Show.

On the 25th of July at the Wales YFC Rural Affairs Reception in the Royal Welsh Show the Prime Pork Producer competition was launched.

The programme will give the successful applicants the opportunity to learn and develop the fundamentals required to run a successful pig enterprise.

The first session will be an on-farm session with an introduction to pig keeping including pig husbandry and handling. Another session will concentrate on the current legislation within the pig industry. The five successful candidates will also benefit from discussions with previous Menter Moch Cymru and Wales YFC candidates to learn from their experiences. Marketing, promotion and branding guidance will also be given to the candidates. With the highlight of the competition being the opportunity to show the pigs at the Royal Welsh Winter Fair.

Dewi Davies, Chairman of the Rural Affairs Committee said, “It gives us great pleasure as the Wales YFC Rural Affairs Committee to launch the Prime Pork Producer competition. The previous scheme gave members across Wales the basis to start pig enterprises which has been of great benefit to diversify and generate additional income for the farm business. The Prime Pork Producer competition will reach its climax at the Winter Fair where the competitors will get the opportunity to exhibit their pigs.”

Angharad Thomas the Rural Affairs Vice Chairman said, “Our thanks must go to the NFU Charitable Trust for the funding and for enabling us to run this scheme which will be of great benefit for our members. With the support of Menter a Busnes we will be able to provide full training and support throughout the programme.“

“We encourage all members who are looking to diversify to apply for this valuable experience.” added Dewi.
